Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Best Candidates:
  • Persons with sagging or excess eyelid skin
  • Bags in lower eyelids
  • Some skin elasticity is beneficial
  • Realistic expectations
About Procedure:
  • Removes excess skin in upper eyelids removes bags from lower eyelids
  • May improve but not completely remove smile lines
  • Tends to make a person look refreshed and younger
  • Does not give the eyes a totally different look
  • Can be done with other surgeries (facelift, skin resurfacing, etc.)
  • Does not lift eyebrows or remove dark circles
Location:
  • Office Surgical Suite (most commonly used)
  • Surgical center (additional costs apply)
  • Hospital (additional costs apply)
Anesthesia:
  • IV Sedation/ Local Anesthetic (possible)
  • General Anesthetic (most commonly used)
Common Risks:
  • Bleeding, Infection, asymmetry, swelling, pain wound separation, possible bad scarring, nerve injury continued aging, anesthetic complications, ectropion (pulling down of lower lid), ptosis (sagging of upper lid), injury to eye or adjacent structures, dryness, tearing
Preop preparations:
  • No Smoking for I week prior to and 2 week after surgery (may cause skin death and loss)
  • No antiinflammatory medications for 2 week prior to and after surgery (may cause increased bleeding)
  • Controlled blood pressure and any other illnesses
Recovery:
  • No exercise or strenuous activity for 3 weeks
  • Can usually return to work in 3-5 days
  • Suture removal in 3 -5 days
Cost:
  • If laser is requested, add $1000
